'Air, Water, Earth'

Air, Water, Earth

This odd juxtaposition of ideas was derived from a photograph a friend took in Iran, probably Isfahan. I first saw it at a time I was seeking patterns that conveyed the feeling of water and somehow the two strains of thought came together in this painting.

The architecture in the background is much the same as in the photo, the 'pool' is my own invention. The pattern used is one of relatively few Islamic patterns that utilises curves (in this instance intersecting circles). It was drawn on a grid that mimicked the required perspective which was then subjected to a sinusoidal function to create the wave structure. Points on the grid were derived from a drawing of the pattern on a plane grid and the curves drawn in by hand.

The painting is owned by Boris and Mandy.
