One of the simplest and most common of Islamic patterns, this design is little more than
an octagonal star in a rectangle (see construction in Figure 1). When the unit is repeated
however a second element, namely the cross, emerges (Figure 2).
The simplicity of this design makes it ideal for experimenting with distortions, but in this
instance only a basic colouring device has been used. Further developements will follow in due
course.
The method of construction shown here is common to most pattern makers but for
