Winter Dawn (Tree No IX)

[Winter Dawn]

Winter Dawn differs from the other four in that it was the first to be printed and varies slightly from the other Trees. In particular, the horizon line is different. It is altogether more mountainous and therefore less typical of a skyline from Southern England. Although this might at first sight set this print apart, the difference can easily be incorporated into the whole concept by taking the cycle of The Seasons to represent not only the passage through a single year and the journey across one day, but also the trek through the aeons.

Winter Dawn may then be seen as the beginning of time when the earth was still throwing up mountains which would only later be eroded into the gentler slopes of the Spring Morning.
